Refilling spent bullet shells is a great way to get the most use out of them as possible. All you need to do this is some empty shells, new primers and powder, gun oil, loading press, and patience. Follow the steps below to refill your metal bullets.
Clean or Buy Fired Shells
Before you even start filling your shells, you need to make sure that they are safe to use. Check to see if any of the bullets have cracks or dents in them. If they do, recycle them instead of trying to refill them. Once you have done this, you can clean the inside of the shell with a soft cloth to remove any remaining powder and debris. Next, lubricate the casings; this will make the following steps easier. If you want to skip this first step entirely, you can also buy cheap once fired reloading brass online that has already been checked over and cleaned out.
Replace the Primer
If you are starting with your own old bullets, remove the old primer. You will need to use a loading press to do this. If you are buying spent shells, you can usually skip this step. Next, use the press to put a new primer into the case. You will still need to do this step if you buy spent shells.
Reload with Powder
Before pouring in the powder, make sure you have the right kind of bullet you are filling. Also, always weigh the powder first so you put in the correct amount. Once you have the right amount, use a small funnel. This will make it much easier to get powder inside the shell with minimal spilling.
Seat the Bullet
Use the loading press again to put on the seating die. This will ensure that nothing spills out of the bullet. Make sure to read the loading press manual for more instructions on how to do this.
Rub with Gun Oil
Finally, put a light coat of gun oil on the outside of the bullet. Your new bullets are now complete!
